SNL’s Romanian Parody

Overnight @danberte pings me an IM with a link to Eat Me Daily’s post on Saturday Night Live’s Virgin Whoopers Parody.
I have embedded the movie below:

As EMD rightly pointed out “this is not particularly flattering for Romania”. And by god this is true.
Unfortunately this is how the Global Media portrays us. We are thieves, we are poor, we are hungry, and sometimes we get the infamous “do you have the internet there?”
So, is this who we are? Are we thieves? Are we the beggers on the streets on major-european cities? Are we the football hooligans? Are we the poor, whom haven’t seen a Hamburger before?
Fuck no, this is a minority.
Makes you think?
of the three nations in that film they had to chose Romanians. Why?
When ultimately the most humble and beautiful of all, were them.
Because they stand out? Or because they don’t stand out, acting like the parody, and ‘they fucking should!’?.

Unfortunately, we are a nation that cannot stand up and talk for themselves. What annoys me in this parody is that the so called Romanians don’t even speak Romanian… i think it’s russian.
This is how we were seen in Borat, now this and I’m sure there’s more to come. Nobody gives a shit, and nobody tries to contradict them. How many parodies have you seen about stupid americans that are bankrupt because of eating in the restaurant and paying with credit cards. There are a lot, and this is true.
How many parodies about obese americans eating fast food have you actually seen? My impression is that they are strong enough and care to much not to be laugh at. Just something to think about…

Hey Lee! Rares is right, they are not Romanians, that’s for sure.
But to your comments above – this is NOT how are, and we are NOT all gypsies, or wear thick gold chains around our neck. But – reality check – we do have a manele-culture, and unfortunately it is now part of our living (we can’t just shoot our neighbor that’s bothering our Sunday afternoons, can we?!). It’s hard to accept this, but this too is part of what Romania is today.
Another thing – US is an opinion leader, RO is not, they need to find amusement (the Indigo sisters surely gave them that) , and they pick on everyone, not just us. So let’s not take this so personally, I mean we too laugh at them, and curse them for the crisis, don’t we?!
Here’s an idea on how to have our say – why don’t we take care of our businesses, support the brains and keep them in RO in stead of sending them to Google or Microsoft? But no, we just export strawberry pickers, and then get upset.

C’mon, that’s a parody. Sad people, that one that cannot laugh about itself.
I bet you know how they portray many other national groups, and I also bet you know that nothing’s sacred for SNL.
I, as a Romanian, had a good laugh at this parody. As good a laugh that I would have with a Wassup parody featuring only obese Americans and rednecks in a Budweiser ad.

I think you missed my point. There is a limit to how far people can go.
Americans can take the piss out of themselves, but without speech.
Here we are portrayed as having no food, yet these people grow and eat organic food in masses which the American society as a whole dream of doing
And why chose Romania, I saw 4 countries in the original movie. They chose us because they think they know us, and they do not know the others. But its far from the truth.
This is (part) my point
